Ryzen 5 5500 with RTX 3070: Bottleneck & FPS

At 1440p, a Ryzen 5 5500 + RTX 3070 build averages about 59 FPS in AAA games at High settings, with 1% lows near 46 FPS: GPU-limited, CPU has headroom. The RTX 3070 is the limiting part at every resolution, so the 6-core Ryzen 5 5500 (AM4) still has headroom for about 90 FPS and room for a faster card later. In esports titles such as CS2 or Valorant expect around 198 FPS, enough for a 144 Hz monitor, while CPU-heavy games like Microsoft Flight Simulator drop to about 49 FPS with a 33% CPU bottleneck. With 8 GB of VRAM, the RTX 3070 is short of the ~10 GB modern games use at 1440p High, so drop texture quality a notch to avoid stutter.

Recommendations

Specific to these parts at 1440p.

Below 60 FPS and GPU-bound: enable DLSS/FSR/XeSS Quality mode or drop to Medium settings for a big frame-rate gain.
8 GB of VRAM is below the ~10 GB these settings need. Lower texture quality to avoid stutter and texture pop-in.
Your 165 Hz monitor can show more frames than this build delivers. Variable refresh (G-Sync/FreeSync) will keep motion smooth.

Ryzen 5 5500 + RTX 3070: quick answers

Does the Ryzen 5 5500 bottleneck the RTX 3070?

1080p: balanced. 1440p: 34% GPU-limited. UW 1440p: 46% GPU-limited. 4K: 63% GPU-limited. At 1440p the CPU keeps up, so this is a sensible pairing. A GPU-limited result is the normal, healthy state for gaming.

How many FPS does the Ryzen 5 5500 with RTX 3070 get?

About 83 FPS at 1080p, 59 FPS at 1440p, 48 FPS at UW 1440p, 33 FPS at 4K in AAA games at High settings without upscaling. In esports games like CS2 and Valorant it reaches roughly 198 FPS at 1440p.

What is the best upgrade for a Ryzen 5 5500 + RTX 3070 build?

At 1440p, the most effective upgrade is the RTX 4070 Super or RX 7700 XT. Use the calculator to check other resolutions and settings.
