Ryzen 7 9850X3D with RTX 4090: Bottleneck & FPS

The Ryzen 7 9850X3D and RTX 4090 leave the CPU with plenty of spare headroom at 4K: about 97 FPS on average in AAA games at High settings, with 1% lows around 80 FPS. At 1080p the Ryzen 7 9850X3D becomes the limit (10% CPU bottleneck at 1080p); from 1440p upward the RTX 4090 takes over and the CPU has capacity to spare. In esports titles such as CS2 or Valorant expect around 311 FPS, enough for a 240 Hz monitor, while CPU-heavy games like Microsoft Flight Simulator drop to about 107 FPS. With ray tracing enabled, expect about 56 FPS at 4K, so turn on DLSS or FSR to get back above 60.

Ryzen 7 9850X3D + RTX 4090: quick answers

Does the Ryzen 7 9850X3D bottleneck the RTX 4090?

1080p: 10% CPU-limited. 1440p: 22% GPU-limited. UW 1440p: 35% GPU-limited. 4K: 53% GPU-limited. At 4K the CPU keeps up, so this is a sensible pairing. A GPU-limited result is the normal, healthy state for gaming.

How many FPS does the Ryzen 7 9850X3D with RTX 4090 get?

About 197 FPS at 1080p, 158 FPS at 1440p, 133 FPS at UW 1440p, 97 FPS at 4K in AAA games at High settings without upscaling. In esports games like CS2 and Valorant it reaches roughly 311 FPS at 4K.

What is the best upgrade for a Ryzen 7 9850X3D + RTX 4090 build?

No graphics card is a big enough step up from the RTX 4090 to be worth it with the Ryzen 7 9850X3D at 4K. Use DLSS or FSR upscaling for more FPS.
