Core Ultra 9 285K with RTX 4090: Bottleneck & FPS

The Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 4090 leave the CPU with plenty of spare headroom at 4K: about 97 FPS on average in AAA games at High settings, with 1% lows around 76 FPS. At 1080p the Core Ultra 9 285K becomes the limit (33% CPU bottleneck at 1080p); from 1440p upward the RTX 4090 takes over and the CPU has capacity to spare. In esports titles such as CS2 or Valorant expect around 307 FPS, enough for a 240 Hz monitor, while CPU-heavy games like Microsoft Flight Simulator drop to about 84 FPS with a 30% CPU bottleneck. With ray tracing enabled, expect about 56 FPS at 4K, so turn on DLSS or FSR to get back above 60.

Core Ultra 9 285K + RTX 4090: quick answers

Does the Core Ultra 9 285K bottleneck the RTX 4090?

1080p: 33% CPU-limited. 1440p: balanced. UW 1440p: 13% GPU-limited. 4K: 37% GPU-limited. At 4K the CPU keeps up, so this is a sensible pairing. A GPU-limited result is the normal, healthy state for gaming.

How many FPS does the Core Ultra 9 285K with RTX 4090 get?

About 153 FPS at 1080p, 144 FPS at 1440p, 129 FPS at UW 1440p, 97 FPS at 4K in AAA games at High settings without upscaling. In esports games like CS2 and Valorant it reaches roughly 307 FPS at 4K.

What is the best upgrade for a Core Ultra 9 285K + RTX 4090 build?

No graphics card is a big enough step up from the RTX 4090 to be worth it with the Core Ultra 9 285K at 4K. Use DLSS or FSR upscaling for more FPS.
