Ryzen 7 9700X with RTX 5090: Bottleneck & FPS

Paired with the RTX 5090, the Ryzen 7 9700X delivers roughly 119 FPS at 4K (1% lows ≈93) in modern AAA games, which our model rates as “GPU-limited, CPU has headroom”. At 1080p and 1440p the Ryzen 7 9700X becomes the limit (46% CPU bottleneck at 1080p); from UW 1440p upward the RTX 5090 takes over and the CPU has capacity to spare. In esports titles such as CS2 or Valorant expect around 360 FPS, enough for a 240 Hz monitor, while CPU-heavy games like Microsoft Flight Simulator drop to about 85 FPS with a 44% CPU bottleneck. With ray tracing enabled, expect about 70 FPS at 4K.

Ryzen 7 9700X + RTX 5090: quick answers

Does the Ryzen 7 9700X bottleneck the RTX 5090?

1080p: 46% CPU-limited. 1440p: 23% CPU-limited. UW 1440p: balanced. 4K: 22% GPU-limited. At 4K the CPU keeps up, so this is a sensible pairing. A GPU-limited result is the normal, healthy state for gaming.

How many FPS does the Ryzen 7 9700X with RTX 5090 get?

About 154 FPS at 1080p, 152 FPS at 1440p, 146 FPS at UW 1440p, 119 FPS at 4K in AAA games at High settings without upscaling. In esports games like CS2 and Valorant it reaches roughly 360 FPS at 4K.

What is the best upgrade for a Ryzen 7 9700X + RTX 5090 build?

There is no faster graphics card to move to, and the Ryzen 7 9700X already keeps the RTX 5090 fed at 4K. Use DLSS or FSR upscaling for more FPS.
